University Place, Washington – Last week, the Smith family experienced every pet owner’s greatest fear…a devastating fire destroyed their house, and killed their dogs and cats, while they were not at home. The fire consumed the house on Menlo Drive West last Thursday.
A neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke, but the dogs and cats trapped inside could not be saved. The seven German shepherds and six cats all perished from smoke inhalation. Owner Derek Smith tearfully tells King 5 News, “None of them could be resuscitated. The smoke was too thick.”
And though the fire did not claim any human lives, the Smith family DID lose members of their family. Smith said:
“Just the amount of loss… it’s really hard. I still lost members of the family, and that’s irreplaceable.”
The home was destroyed in the blaze. Investigators believe the fire may have started in the basement.
