San Bernardino, California – In mid-November, a beautiful German shepherd alerted humans to her discarded newborn puppies, who had been callously thrown in a dumpster. The three-year-old dog, dubbed Roxy, saved her babies from death, but now she is at a busy animal shelter in San Bernardino.
The Save SBC Shelter Friends Facebook page recounts the cruel incident:
This poor mama was found inside a trash enclosure crying for her newborn puppies who were thrown into the dumpster to die. A resident of the apartment complex heard the puppies and retrieved them from the trash. Worried mama followed closely behind. As you can imagine, mama is completely traumatized and very protective of her puppies in the shelter after what she witnessed a human do to her little ones!
Roxy is rightfully distrustful of people being around her babies and because of her reaction to humans, she is in need of a rescue group that can take her, and her babies, in. Notes from the shelter reveal her concerning behavior:
11/14/2025 EVALUATION – Dog was laying against the kennel gate nursing her puppies as staff approached. When staff knelt and turned sideways, dog began growling and lip lifting, staring at staff with dilated pupils. Staff leaned away and spoke softly, and dog stopped growling, beginning to lip lick and looking away. Dog began panting and watched staff whale-eyed until staff moved on. If fearful behavior escalates or prevents staff from being able to safely handle and interact with her or her puppies, we will need to seek urgent rescue intervention for her in order to place her in a calmer, more stable environment that can provide the support and care she needs while she raises her litter.
