Bangkok, Thailand – A man working at the Safari World Zoo in Bangkok was fatally mauled by lions this week. According to sources, the staff member, who had decades of experience with big cats, was attacked shortly after stepping out of a vehicle.
The man, Jian Rangkasamee, 59, was tasked with feeding the lions, but on Wednesday, when he exited his truck, a group lions approached him and attacked in front of horrified zoo visitors who expressed dismay that he had turned his back to the big cats.
Staff was eventually able to pull the man away from the lions, but they had mauled him for at least 15 minutes. By the time the attack was over, Rangkasamee was dead and the “majority of his flesh was damaged or missing,” Viral Press reported.
As reported by NBC News, wildlife officials are investigating to ensure that the zoo is following safety protocols and are in legal possession of the lions.
