Germany – A German zoo is under fire for killing members of their “overpopulated” baboon population and feeding them to predators at the facility. The Nuremberg Zoo culled 12 baboons who were at the facility, citing overcrowding as the reason for their killing.
“Out of respect” for zoo visitors, the heads, hands, and feet were removed from the baboons before being fed to lions, tigers, and maned wolves in view of people.
As reported by The Independent, the zoo staff’s efforts to keep the baboon population under control failed, and the number of primates ballooned to an unsustainable number. The zoo has said it will not stop breeding entirely, citing “its long-term conservation role.”
Animal rights activists are protesting the killings and the zoo’s culling is now under investigation by Nuremberg-Fürth public prosecutor’s office.
